Flower Arrangements Free

How to Make Free Flower Table Arrangements for a Banquet

Lavender cut from my garden

Tutorial on making flower arrangements for free from
flowers in your yard.
My garden in Orange County is 100% organic.
I do not use pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers.
I'm growing herbs, flowers, and vegetables.

In California public schools funding for sports other than
the main stream - is non existent. Events are put on with
the parents funding everything. I want the end of season
party to be special and fun.
My son plays Lacrosse for Dana Hills High School
Out banquet was last night and I made ten arrangements
from flowers in my yard.
Here is the step by step.

orange buck of water with frecias and lavender
You will need
some buckets filled with water
good pruning sheers
regular scissors
recycled plastic food containers
paper
recycled ribbon or twine

White bucket of water with Boston fern fronds

First step is to cut more than you might think you need.
Boston fern grows like a weed on my shady side yard.
I cut about fifty swords and threw them in a bucket.
French lavender, grosso, latifolia, and intermedia
Out front in full sun I have four different lavender plants that
keep blooming as long as I keep them thinned out. Cutting some
eighteen inch stalks and they go in another bucket. I trimmed about
40 big bunches.
roses, coreopsis, and lavender
Out front I also have some roses, sunflowers, freesias, and
snapdragons. I cut half of the front yard flowers to make long
as possible stems.
This mix went into another bucket.
Trimming out flowers will keep the plants
healthy and make them repeat bloom.

lavender cut outdoors on brick patio
Instead of working in my garage I chose to sit on my front
this makes clean up easier and the weather here is amazing.
This photograph shows a long stalk of lavender. Only two
flowers will be used from this piece.

remove lower leaves

With your fingers strip off almost all the leaves and stack the
flowers facing same way. Trim the bottoms off to have a
piece now about eight inches long.
trimmed stalk - more flowers fit in the vase and less bacteria in water

You don't want all the leaves to crowd the vase, or rot
in water. The flower is the most fragrant and pretty part
of the plant. This activity is quiet lovely. The aroma of
the lavender will penetrate your soul and relax your mind.

Some photos of the lavender waiting for trimming. The bees
followed me into the shade. They didn't bother me, I think
they were getting one last sip of the now easy pickings.

painted blanket, rosemary, feverfew for arrangement
From my backyard:
sweet peas, painted blanket, rosemary, thyme,
chamomile, and more roses.

plastic buckets to keep flowers fresh before the event
I am using plastic food containers that I save and keep
clean and stacked under the sink. Ask friends to save them
- recycling at its finest :)

I stripped all the flower leaves down and begin distributing
a variety to each vase. They don't have to be perfect or
exactly matching. This is fun.

to save costs and the plastic vases are covered in tissue and ribbon

You could use fabric to cover the vases. I've hot glued bark
on vases and used brown paper lunch bags. These are just
a simple thank you gift to volunteers and Senior Mom's
on the team.
Each arrangement has about 30 flowers and they smell
heavenly

They are done! Sitting on my dining room table, waiting to
be loaded into two baskets with some rags underneath to
keep them standing upright for the ride.

Our dinner at El Adobe was a success. I hope the simple
gift of a little bouquet with a note saying :
"Thank you"
will inspire more volunteers for next year.
If you have an Orange County Charity
that might need free table arrangements
or you want to pick up organic flowers
to cheer someone- let me know how I can help.

When you look at mortgage rates,
you’ll see that they’re based on different factors,
such as the type of mortgage,
the loan amount and points.
The APR is useful when you’re comparing
the total cost of mortgage products
among lenders, because it includes
estimated loan fees and closing costs
spread out over the length of the loan.

    Orange County Garden

Red giant mustard in the dark blue pot.
All winter / spring we have been cutting
kale, spinach, arugula, and this red
giant mustard for salad greens. I planted a big mix
of edible salad greens - mesclun,
    tyee F1 spinach, and another
    thirty varieties all from seed.
    I'm allowing this mustard to
go to seed to have more to share and trade seeds.
    My side yard is small.
I don't use any fertilizers, no chemicals
     - only compost and water.
Yes I have slugs and snails
(I'm constantly hunting them and putting
    out yeast sugar water traps)
but we didn't buy much green produce
    for the past six months.
Mind you, my daughter is vegan, greens
    are her mainstay.
I'm adding romanesco, some heirloom broccoli's, dragon carrots,
squash and multi-colored heritage carrots today.
The ten varieties of tomatoes are already blooming. Of course
all the yellow and purple cherry ones have fruit. Yummy!
It was foggy yesterday morning- good for photos but you
can't see the ocean very well in this picture, but its there.

Left two pots with geraniums, impatiens and purple pole beans
that will be soon climbing and take over the impatiens. This makes
a nice tent on the pergola.
To the right is a spectacular epi.
When I planted this epi it had four colors,
but the orange variety is the heartiest and blooms first.
There are pink blossoms starting on the opposite side.
My plan was that all four epis would evenly mix in
the pot. So much for plans.
Below is a pot saucer with a number of seeds drying-
nasturtiums that are almost spent in the garden, sweet
peas and painted blankets that still are going strong.

This pot has a rose I haven't patented yet. In the 1990's
I had a house in the central valley. What started as a hobby-
hybridizing roses became a passion. Many extinct varieties
I found in graveyards around the world. Yes graveyards-
because varieties that were planted in the 1800's that survived
with little care were valuable as seed stock to me.
I ended up selling a number of patents after I moved to
    Orange County, California.
The weather here did not suit the type of
roses I perfected- roses that required no spraying of any kind,
liked heat, repeat bloomed and have the ruffley peony look.

Now after living in moist Coastal Air I've been working on
roses that don't rust and are also disease resistant - totally
organic again same flower shapes... It's more difficult than
heat resistance- its taken about eight years to have four cultivars.
With my work as a mortgage banker - sometimes the roses
get neglected. Only the tough ones will make the cut.
Then of course I'm slowly editing my fourth novel.
My children are almost old enough to help, hmmm
wondering what wonderful things the next stages of
    my life will unfold.

This jasmine has almost taken over the tree here.
Two years ago I almost cut the whole tree down.
This variety drops about forty leaves a day - year
round drip torture as it is planted down wind right by
the pool. Also in the photo hydrangea- I love them
    white.

Close up of the epi you can see some snail damage
    on the leaves.

Yes this is a real working mailbox in Laguna Beach

A funky example of a Laguna Beach mailbox.

Preview of my side garden. The epis are blooming!
I'm praying for no wind and squishing snails to be
able to enjoy the week or two of blooming glory,
Next post I will put up more of the West side of my
garden. Combining plants helps keep pests down.
I don't use fertilizers or any chemicals. I compost
and treat things with simple green solutions.
    Why you say?
Most of my back yard is edible!
See the bowl below (blue dish with seeds) -
I collect seeds to use next year and to trade with
    friends and family.

    Sun Casts Out June Gloom

The sky was cloudy this morning.
Do we have Orange County June gloom already?
Then at 11:15 the sun decides to come out.
Casting the fog aside, I feel that way too.
    I'm taking the day off.
I will be holding an open house tomorrow
    with my friend Hillary Caston.
Looks like she already has offers on
    the Egret listing.
